Solar glass is the combination of solar and glass technologies. Glass windows coated with a low-emittance (low-E) coating block radiant heat transfer. This lowers the amount of heat that passes through a window. Depending on energy needs, different types of low-E coatings allow for high, moderate, or low solar gains. Solar glass is often used to lower energy costs.

In warm climates, and indeed, even in cool climates that experience warm summers, glass features - whether in the form of windows,conservations,skylights or doors - can present a problem. Due to the nature of glass, incoming sunlight is inhibited from performing as it naturally would. Instead of reflecting off the surface and radiating back in to the atmosphere, it is trapped in buildings. This can result in a fortune being spent on air conditioning and fans - both of which use precious energy and cost money to install and run. While effective at reducing temperature, fans and air-conditioning do little for the glare that arises from sunlight, which is dangerous for eyesight and can make the environment a less pleasant one.
