Glucosamine is obtained from the shells of sea crustaceans. It is naturally contained in any healthy cartilage. Glucosamine encourages thecartilage to create the fundamental building material of the cartilage, proteoglycans and collagen. Proteoglycans with their spatial structure resemblebottle-cleaning brushes. The space between the bristles of this imaginedbottle-cleaning brush is filled with collagen. While collagen and elastin areflexible substances, proteoglycans provide the cartilage with strength. In ahealthy joint, the combination of proteoglycans and collagen is such that thecartilage is both strong and flexible enough. Glucosamine also hasanti-inflammatory effects and prevents the creation of enzymes which can damagethe cartilage. With age, however, the ability of the organism to produce thenecessary amount of glucosamine is reduced and it is therefore advisable tosupplement it in the form of food supplements. The main action of glucosaminein the human body, is to stimulate the synthesis of cartilage in joints. Also,by inhibiting the degradation of cartilage the effect can be relief from thepain and inflammation around joints that is associated with osteoarthritis.
