About Kunming Flower industry:

      Kunming, the provincial capital known as “Spring City” for its mild climate, is the center of much of Yunnan’s, and thereby China’s, flower industry.

    Yunnan’s flora has been popular with western horticulturists since a craze for Chinese flowers spread in the 19th century, and some of the region’s native blooms — such as primroses, camellias, azaleas and lilies — are now staples of gardens in Europe and America. The province boasts 18,000 species of plants, accounting for more than half of the total in all of China. 

    The modern Yunnan flower industry began developing in the 1980s, when some farmers in Dounan started growing flowers instead of crops. The central government’s Western Development Strategy, begun in 2000, helped accelerate the industry’s development. The initiative, meant to help the poorer western provinces catch up with the eastern and coastal regions, calls for incentives for foreign businesses and the development of infrastructure like rail lines and highways. 

    These improvements made Kunming a more attractive place to do business, and were especially beneficial to its flower trade, which is time-sensitive and energy-intensive. Though some growers deal directly with wholesalers, often they send their flowers to large wholesale markets via refrigerated vans or planes. If the flowers are to be exported, they are shipped all over the world and then sent to individual buyers. This requires that the product be watered and temperature-controlled for several days.
