[Description]
Soft capsule, containing yellowish to orange-yellow oil liquid.
[Indication]
This capsule is indicated in the prevention and curing of arteriosclerosis and in the reduction of the blood lipid, etc.

[Dosage and Administration]
Oral administration, 5~6 capsules per time, twice a day, or follow the physician’s direction.
[Adverse reaction]
A few patients show some adverse reactions, such as nausea, loose stool, etc. at the initial period of administration, and turn better when keeping on administration.

[Pharmacology & Toxicology]
1. Pharmacology
This drug contains rich γ-linolenic acid (GLA), which can transform into PEG2, PGI2 and PGF2a, is distinctly effective in decreasing blood lipid and in antiplatelet aggregation. γ-linolenic acid has an obvious cholesterol-lowering effect, 163 times of that of linolenic acid. Biennisol Oil can reduce total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and VLDL cholesterol in the serum of hyperlipidemic rats, and at the same time clearly raise the level of HDL cholesterol. The change of HDL cholesterol results from the increase of cholesterol of HDL subconstituent, but except for HDL subconstituent, the cholesterols level does not change distinctly. In experiment, Wistar rat is fed with high blood lipid modeling agent or thioacetic acid to make a hyperlipemia disease model. The result indicated that Biennisol Oil and its sodium salt have relative strong blood lipid reduction and antiatherosclerotic effect. Besides, Biennisol Oil can participate in the synthesis and balancing of prostaglandins (PGs). Also it is able to inhibit platelet evidently from aggregation or synthesis of thromboxame A2 (TXA2), thus changing the ratio of TXA2/PGI2. So this medicine has the function for preventing and curing thrmbotic cardiovascular diseases. What’s more, γ-linolenic acid is a stimulus to brown adipose tissue, promoting the activity of mitochondria of brown fatty acid to consume surplus heat, with a certain slimming effect.
2. Toxicology
The acute toxicity experiment for Biennisol Oil did not detect any LD50 in mice. In another animal experiment, rabbit was continually fed with this drug at a dosage of 3g/kg/day, twice a day, for 120 days, and then killed, and no pathological change was found in its heart, liver, kidney, spleen, adrenal gland and thymus gland.
[Pharmacokinetics]
Being one of fatty acids necessary for human body, γ-linolenic acid (GLA) can be metabolized in the body into dihomo-γ-linolenic acid or arachidonic acid, and further into prostaglandins (PGs) and leukotriene (LT). γ-linolenic acid (GLA) and its serial metabolites have broad physiological effects in the immune, cardiovascular, genital and endocrine systems.
