     Polycarbonate and polyester are two of the most common materials used in membrane switch applications.  Polycarbonate is easier to print on, die cut and emboss – making it the more cost effective but in most cases not the most prudent choice.  Customers should consider that polycarbonate does not wear as well as other materials (less than 40,000 actuations), and is more prone to damage from certain chemicals. 

Clearly polyester is the material of choice for switches that require a large number of actuations or if the overlay is to be embossed. Generally our life cycle tests show polyester keypads can be actuated in excess of 1,000,000 times before showing any signs of wear. Polyester also has superior chemical resistance to that of polycarbonate.

Customers often request lighting elements, such as LEDs, are included in the assembly to punctuate activation and provide illumination.  For a uniform light over larger areas, fiber optics and electroluminescent panels are some options most commonly implemented.
