Boron tribromide, BBr3, is a colorless, fuming liquid compound containing boron and bromine. It is usually made by heating boron trioxide with carbon in the presence of bromine: this generates free boron which reacts vigorously with the bromine. It is very volatile and fumes in air because it reacts vigorously with water to form boric acid and hydrogen bromide.

Health hazards

It has strong stimulative effect to eyes, skin, mucous membrane and respiratory system.

If you inhale this product, you will die from the spasm, edema or inflammation of throat and bronchus, or you will get chemical pneumonia or pulmonary edema then die of it.

The more symptoms of being poisoned are coughing, wheezing, and laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea and vomiting. You will also have a sensation of being burned.

Operation Notes

1.  Make sure that the air is dry and ventilative in the operation room/laboratory.

2.Operators required wearing masks or protective anti-virus mask to prevent inhaling the poisonous gas. 

3.Operators required wearing rubber gloves to avoid skin contact.

4.Boron tribromide is strictly prohibited contact with water.

Emergency treatment

1.Skin contact: Immediately take off contaminated clothing, and use large amount of flowing water to clean the skin which have contacted the product. If the skin is burned, you should consider medical treatment.

2.Eye contact: immediately filed eyelid, use flowing water to clean the eye for more than 10 minutes, or use 2% sodium bicarbonate solution for cleaning.

3.Inhalation: Immediately leave the scene to the place where the air is fresh. Pay special attention to keep warm and maintain the airway open. If necessary, artificial respiration is needed and then goes for medical treatment.

4.Miseating: The patient should immediately wash his or her mouth when he or she is sober, drink some milk or eat some egg white.

5. Fire fighting methods: dry powder, sand, carbon dioxide. Water is prohibited.

Emergency treatment of substantial leakage

People in the leak contaminated area should be evacuated. Those who have nothing to do with this accident should never enter the contaminated area. It is suggested that people who handle the emergency should wear self-contained breathing apparatus and chemical protective clothing. Not to contact the leakage directly, and plug under the safe circumstances. You should splash soda ash on the ground, and then wash the ground with plenty of water. If the leakage is large, people should cast it away after the collection of the recycling or harmless treatment.

Uses: Boron tribromide is used as catalyst, intermediate and brominating agent in organic synthesis and is the raw material of making high-purity boron powder and other organoboron compound. It is also used as the dopant source of the semiconductor silicon and is used to make the high-purity boron and the organoboron compound.
