It is mainly used in preparation of cermets, which are frequently used to machine steel materials at high cutting speed.Heat-resistance, corrosion resistance and resistance to oxidation of hard alloy can be improved clearly when Tic(6~30%) is mixed in WC-Co cemented carbide and forn TiC-WC solid solution with WC.
Tool bits without tungsten can be made of titanium carbide in nickel-cobalt matrix cermet,this enhances the cutting speed, precision and smoothness.
Titanium carbide is used as a heat shield for re-entry to the atmosphere of space shuttles or other similar vehicles.
It can be polished and used in scratch-proof watches. If etching is requested, titanium carbide can be etched by reactive ion etching process.
