1 What Is Acne and What Causes It?

Acne is a condition of the sebaceous hair follicle. The hair follicles, or pores, in your skin contain sebaceous glands (also called oil glands). These glands make sebum, which is an oil that lubricates your hair and skin. Under normal conditions, sebum travels up the hair follicle and out to the skins surface. However, with acne, sebum is trapped within the follicle, clogging the follicle. The bacterium that seems to cause the majority of acnes is called Propionibacterium acnes (P.acnes) and is present in everybodys skin, usually lodged in the hair follicle. The clogged follicle becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. When the sebaceous gland gets clogged, and sebum builds up inside the follicle, P. acnes multiples rapidly and can result in acne.
