Teak decking is a decking that is made from the wood of the teak tree. The teak used to be harvested from a forest that is filled with teak frees that are at least 100 years old. The oil from the teak tree causes it to become waterproof. In addition, it is resistant against the damages caused by insects. It is durable and don’t easily become rotten. Its durability makes it become one of the top choices among the consumers. The teak decking will make your patio garden look luxurious.  Teak decking is available in different colors including reddish brown and yellow brown color. The color of teak will darken after a period of time. It is tight and has an even grain.

Because teak decking has a hard surface, it is suitable to be used for a patio that experiences a high volume of traffic each day. If the family members often use the patio, you should install the teak decking. The hardest teak, Brazilian Teak, has a Janka scale rating of 3540. The African teak has a Janka scale rating of 1650. However, the African teak is harder compare to the maple wood. The Thai and Burmese teak has the same Janka scale rating as the oak wood.  Teak decking needs regular maintenance. One way to clean the teak deck is to rinse it with clean water. You should not use a water hose to spray against the deck with high pressure. To prevent damages on the flooring, you should spray the water against it at a low pressure.

If you need to wash the deck, you should use a mild soap detergent and a cotton mop. After you have mopped the teak deck, you must rinse it with salt water. If you want to scrub the surface, make sure you don’t scrub it with too much force. If you scrub it with too much force, the highest layer of the wood cell will be removed. You are advised not to polish the teak decking with oil. The oil will hold the dirt and cause the deck to be stained permanently. If you find problem with your teak deck, you must quickly repair it. If there are holes on the deck, the water will flow into the sub deck and cause the growth of mildew. If you don’t know how to repair it, it is recommended that you hire a Do-It-Yourself expert.

Many homeowners aren’t sure about the durability of the teak decking. Due to the over harvesting of the teak tree, the two strongest species of the teak trees are almost extinct. Despite that, the manufacturers have taken the initiative to grow more teak trees. When buying it, make sure you look for the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) seal. The seal signifies that it meets with the standards of the industry. Teak decking is a great investment for homeowners because it will increase the resale value of your house. Even if you don’t plan to sell your house, you will be able to enjoy using it for many years to come.
